Tesla is not in discussions with the Indian government about lowering import taxes on electric vehicles, the source said. Reuters reported on Tuesday that Tesla’s top executives met with government officials in India this week to discuss, among other things, local sourcing of parts.

Tesla’s renewed interest in India comes nearly a year after it abandoned plans to sell cars in the country.

The company’s chief executive, Elon Musk, has said that India’s import taxes are among the highest in the world after failing to secure lower import taxes.

Local sourcing fits with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” campaign to attract manufacturers, especially as companies seek to diversify their supply chains.
