In 2023, BYD Hungary builds battery factory again

BYD builds battery factory

BYD Hungary builds battery factory again: investment of over 200 million RMB, personnel recruitment has started.

On July 13th, according to a report from the Financial Associated Press, BYD has made another move in Europe and plans to build a battery assembly plant in Hungary, with an investment of more than 200 million RMB.

This is BYD’s second factory in Hungary after the pure electric bus and truck factory in Hungary.

It is reported that the new factory will provide power battery supply for Tesla’s Berlin factory.

According to reports, BYD has recently started the recruitment of personnel related to its Hungarian business, including government affairs directors and equipment engineers.

This shows that its new factory in Ford, a small town in northern Hungary, is already advancing.

This was previously announced by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade SZIJJÁRTÓ Péter during his visit to Shenzhen at the end of June.

He said that the new factory will not produce batteries, but only assemble them, with an investment of 10 billion forints (about 210 million RMB).

Although Hungary is not a traditional automobile manufacturing powerhouse, relying on the industrial transfer of the German automobile manufacturing industry and its relatively cheap cost advantage, the country has established a European-wide auto parts and vehicle manufacturing capacity with the help of foreign capital.

At the same time, the Hungarian market is no stranger to BYD.

The pure electric bus and truck factory in Hungary is BYD’s first factory in Europe, and it is also the first electric vehicle factory invested by a Chinese new energy brand in Europe.

In 2017, BYD established Europe’s first battery electric bus truck factory in Hungary, and has delivered the first pure electric bus to Volánbusz, the largest local public transport operator.

In the first half of this year, BYD accounted for about 42% of the newly launched local buses, occupying an absolute leading position in the Hungarian bus market.

BYD blade batteries

In addition, BYD has previously reached a power battery supply agreement with Tesla to provide blade batteries for the rear-drive Model Y produced at its Berlin factory.

According to Miao Wei, deputy director of the Economic Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, as Tesla’s Berlin plant begins production of the rear-drive version of the Model Y equipped with BYD power batteries, with the increase in delivery volume, BYD’s power battery overseas business will usher in high growth.

Therefore, establishing a battery assembly plant in Hungary will help BYD provide Tesla with faster and more convenient services.

According to the latest data, the cumulative installed capacity of BYD power batteries in the first half of this year was about 60.25GWh, a year-on-year increase of 77%, indicating that its power battery external supply business is constantly strengthening.

In addition to battery factories, news about BYD’s construction of factories in Europe has also emerged recently.

According to foreign media reports on May 22, in addition to Hungary, BYD is also seeking the possibility of establishing vehicle factories in France, Spain, Germany and other European countries.

Shu Youxing, general manager of BYD’s European auto sales division, said in March that “BYD is looking for new factories in Europe, or acquiring existing factories, in order to gain a firm foothold in the highly competitive auto industry in the region.”

Regarding the layout of a complete vehicle plant in Europe, BYD’s latest response stated that it is currently evaluating the feasibility of building a passenger car plant in Europe and is looking for a suitable location.
