
Global Power Battery Installations Q1 2023: CATL Leads, BYD Second

According to news on May 3, the latest statistics from South Korean market research organization SNE Research show that in the first quarter of 2023, the global installed capacity of electric vehicle batteries reached 133.0GWh.
A year-on-year increase of 38.6%, a slight decrease from last year, but still maintained Solid uptrend. Ningde Times ranked first, BYD remained second with more than double the growth rate, and LG ranked third.
From January to March 2023, the total battery energy used by global electric vehicles (EV, PHEV, HEV) is about 133.0GWh, a year-on-year increase of 38.6%. With its price advantage in the domestic market and independent supply chain management, BYD achieved more than two-fold growth and ranked second.
The combined market share of the three Korean battery makers (Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solutions and SK Innovation) was 24.7 percent, down 1.3 percentage points from a year earlier but showing an overall upward trend.
LG Energy Solutions ranked third, with a year-on-year increase of 37.5%. SK Innovation ranked fifth, with a year-on-year increase of 5.1%. Samsung SDI ranked sixth, with a year-on-year increase of 52.9%.
The only Japanese battery maker to make it into the top 10 was Panasonic, whose battery usage was 11.9GWh, up 37.5% year-on-year.
As one of Tesla’s main battery suppliers, Panasonic’s batteries are mainly installed in Tesla models sold in the North American market.
In the first quarter of 2023, CATL’s installed capacity of power batteries will reach 46.6GWh, a year-on-year increase of 35.9%. Its market share reached 35.0%, accounting for one-third of the global market, ranking first in the world.
It is expected that CATL will continue to firmly grasp the leading position in the global market.
