Genesis teams up with Samsung to develop new GV90 electric SUV

Genesis new GV90 electric SUV

On July 25th, Genesis is developing a new flagship electric SUV model – GV90, which is the company’s largest electric vehicle to date, adopts the latest technology, and is also a rare event between Hyundai Motor Group and Samsung.

The current flagship SUV of Genesis is the GV80, while the flagship sedan is the G90.

Recently, overseas media reported that Genesis will launch the GV90 as the new flagship SUV.

The new car is based on Hyundai Group’s E-GMP platform and supports 800V technology.

It is a pure electric SUV and is expected to be officially launched in 2024.

Judging from the positioning of GV80 as a medium and large SUV, the future GV90 must be positioned as a large SUV with a higher level.

The new car offers a three-row, seven-seater layout, and of course there will also be a three-row, six-seater version.

Having a larger body size also means that the third-row space will be larger than that of the GV80, and it is no longer just the main 5-seater.

While Hyundai’s EVs are currently based on the E-GMP platform, including the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60, this electric SUV is a “next-generation model” based on a new dedicated platform that the company Part of the investment of 109.4 trillion won (currently about 613.734 billion RMB) in the next ten years.

The new IMA platform

Chung Eui-sun, CEO of Hyundai Motor Group, said the company will replace the E-GMP platform with a new Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA).

According to reports, the new IMA platform is not only suitable for mid-size SUVs, but will also achieve “significant progress”, as Chung explained: It will cover almost all vehicle categories, from small and large SUVs to pickups, as well as Hyundai Group’s flagship model.

My query found that South Korea’s ET News reported last month that Hyundai was nearing final development of the platform, including a 113.2kWh battery pack.

If the news is true, it will be one of the models with the highest battery capacity among mass-produced EVs, higher than the 107.8kWh of the Mercedes-Benz EQS, 100kWh of the Tesla Model S and 99.8kWh of the Kia EV9.

It is expected to reach more than 800km.

The GV90’s main rivals are the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and the BMW iX.

The former has a maximum power of 360Ps and a battery life of 670km, while the latter has a maximum power of 619Ps and a battery life of 640km.

According to Korea Auto Blog, the GV90 will use Samsung Electronics’ “Exynos Auto V920” chip and bring advanced assisted driving functions, digital cockpit and safety features to provide users with an immersive driving experience and will provide the latest Infotainment systems, including video streaming services, gaming, and more.

The Samsung Exynos Auto V920 is equipped with 10 CPU cores for a 70% increase in performance compared to the previous generation, while the NPU performance has also increased by 270%.

The price of GV90 is expected to be 100,000 US dollars (about 691,700 RMB), while the price of domestic EQS SUV is 910,500-1,100,500, and the price of BMW iX is 746,900-996,900.

So in comparison, Genesis GV90’s cost performance and practicality will be better.

Genesis has won the first place in the quality of new cars of J.D. Power American luxury brand for four consecutive years, and its sales in the United States are also rising steadily.

The Genesis GV90 will mark the first time Hyundai Motor Group will use a Samsung chip.

In addition, Samsung Display will supply OLED displays for it, another precedent for Hyundai.
