SAIC Motor: solid-state batteries will be put into use in 2024

SAIC develops long-endurance solid-state power battery
July news, “SAIC Group” official account news, July 6, SAIC Group signed a contract with Qingtao (Kunshan) Energy Development Co., Ltd., and SAIC Qingtao’s “Solid State Battery Joint Laboratory” was unveiled.
According to reports, the two parties will cooperate in projects such as mass production and application of solid-state power batteries with a long battery life of more than 1,000 kilometers, 4C fast charging technology for solid-state power batteries, development of high-safety and long-life solid-state power batteries, and development of high-efficiency solid-state power battery integration technology.
According to the plan, the solid-state power battery with a long battery life of more than 1,000 kilometers jointly developed by the two parties will be the first to be applied to new models of SAIC’s own brand next year.
The editor learned that Qingtao Energy focuses on the industrialization of solid-state lithium batteries, has built the first solid-state lithium battery production line in China, and has now built a complete industrial ecological chain of “new energy materials – solid-state lithium batteries – automation equipment – comprehensive utilization of lithium battery resources – scientific research results incubation – industrial investment”.
In June 2020 and January 2022, SAIC Motor successively participated in Qingtao Energy’s E+ round and F++ round of financing.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, SAIC Motor will invest 300 billion RMB in innovative fields such as smart electric vehicles, fully accelerate the pace of independent innovation, and comprehensively transform into a high-tech enterprise.
In March of this year, the SAIC Innovation Research and Development Institute was formally established, and recently released “seven technology bases”, including “SAIC Nebula” battery electric exclusive system platform, “SAIC Everest” mechatronics architecture, “SAIC Galaxy” hydrogen energy exclusive architecture three vehicle technology bases, and “Blue Core” powertrain system, platform “Rubik’s Cube” battery system, “Green Core” electric drive system, and “Galaxy” full-stack smart car solution four key system technology bases.
Among them, the platform-based “Magic Cube” battery system adopts the ONE PACK SIZE uniform size platform design, with uniform length and width, and 3 series of thicknesses;
It is compatible with 4 chemical systems of lithium iron phosphate, ternary, high-nickel, and silicon-doped lithium supplementation, and supports solid-state battery technology; 44-150kWh ultra-wide power gradient, which can cover applications from economical to luxury large-scale products;
In terms of battery safety, it has innovated and created an industry-leading “zero thermal runaway” protection system.

SAIC’s 800V platform models will land in the second half of this year
According to news on July 22, SAIC held a media communication meeting on July 20 and 21.
Zu Sijie, vice president and chief engineer of SAIC, introduced the company’s progress and layout in the fields of electrification, intelligence, and networking.
Among them, the 800V silicon carbide platform model will be put into use on the third model of the IM brand in the second half of 2023, and the solid-state battery is expected to be launched in 2024, and it will also be carried by the IM brand model first.
In 2025, the application of solid-state batteries in entry-level products will be realized.
In addition, SAIC stated that “both 800V and battery replacement will be done”, because both have the characteristics of fast energy replenishment.
As for the positioning of its IM and Rising brands, SAIC explained that IM will take the lead in applying the latest technology to meet users’ needs for power and intelligence; Rising and Roewe will be more oriented to family and mass users.
According to previous reports, Liu Tao, CEO of IM Motors, warmed up his third model at the end of last month, the IM coupe SUV LS6.
Its single-motor and dual-motor models have been declared by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and are expected to debut at the Chengdu Auto Show.
The car is developed based on an 800V silicon carbide platform.
It claims that the zero-to-hundred acceleration time is less than 3.5 seconds, and the top speed can reach 252km/h.
