Mercedes-Benz CEO: We only do electric cars, not ‘synthetic fuel’ cars

On April 27th, in an interview with the German newspaper “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kellenius insisted that Mercedes will fully develop electric vehicles and will not invest in synthetic vehicles. Fuel technology, also known as “e-fuel”.

While governments around the world are putting in place regulations that spell the end of combustion-engined vehicles, some automakers are trying to save conventional gasoline vehicles by using “e-fuels”.

These include Porsche and BMW, which have even invested in synthetic fuel production centers, but not everyone is convinced that this will be the savior of gasoline technology.

Kellenius believes that electric vehicle technology is superior to “electric fuel” in terms of power output, efficiency, durability and cost, and said that starting in 2025, all new vehicle architectures will be adjusted specifically for electric drive.

He also pointed out that the popularity of electric vehicles needs to establish a sound charging infrastructure, which is also an area that Mercedes is investing in.

Kerennius’ comments come as Mercedes-Benz accelerates its shift to electric vehicles. Currently, Mercedes-Benz offers far more electrified models than BMW, Audi and Porsche.
Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz’s top marque is doubling down on efforts to cement the auto giant’s lead.

Recently Mercedes-Maybach, the automaker’s ultra-luxury brand, unveiled its first electric model, the Maybach EQS SUV.

In addition, AMG, the company’s high-performance brand, has also added a growing number of electrified models to its lineup and is expected to launch its first truly electric sports car in the near future.

Even the company’s commercial division has unveiled its first electric products, including an electric semi-trailer and an electric van.
